Self-Care Tips for Student Activists, Advocates, and Allies

Take care of your body

Drink plenty of water, nourish yourself, and aim for enough sleep to feel re-energized (recommended 7-9 hours). Eating balanced meals, having healthy snacks, staying hydrated, and prioritizing rest will help contribute to your overall wellbeing. In addition, movement and exercise can relieve stress, improve memory, help one sleep better, and boost overall mood. Find movement that works best for you. When under so much pressure, it is important to move your body and allow that pressure to escape.

Support For Students Impacted By Campus Climate Concerns

As an agency, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) remains committed to the celebration and promotion of diversity in all its forms. We condemn oppression in every form and work to provide a safe, welcoming and affirming environment for all persons. Creating and sustaining a welcoming campus climate requires mutual respect for all. And that means discrimination and harassment are not acceptable at the University of Michigan. At CAPS, we remain committed to affirming inclusivity, value, and belonging of all students.

Self-Care For Incidents Of Campus Climate Concerns

When faced with social injustices, bias incidents, and controversial speakers, it is extremely difficult to cope and know what to do.  Feeling overwhelmed with the current socio-political state, experiencing discrimination, or being impacted by contentious people or policies increases stress which remains correlated to negative mental health outcomes.  During these times, it remains imperative that we take care of ourselves, take care of loved ones, and take care of our campus community.

#Dancingtherapists

Sometimes...therapists have to dance.  Dance has both physical and mental health benefits.  It can reduce stress, diminish depression, communicate feelings, increase energy levels, help you feel connected to peers, and more.

Urgent Support

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free confidential psychological services for currently enrolled U of M undergraduate and graduate students.  These services include support for students experiencing a crisis or urgent situation. The following is a list of crisis services provided by CAPS.  Consultation with CAPS is available if help (in-person or virtually) is needed in determining what service fits for your need.

Men and Suicide

Did you know? According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Suicide among males is four times higher than among females

  • Male deaths represent 79% of all US suicides

  • Suicide rate peaks in men between the ages of 20 to 24

Diversity and Suicide Prevention

Suicide touches all races, ethnicities, abilities, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, nationalities, religions, and veteran status.  All Individuals are unique and have intersecting identities. When we don’t acknowledge the identities impacted by suicide, we enable the stigma that keeps too many silent and possibly disregard the specific needs of individuals.  While the list on this page may not be exhaustive, we hope to share statistics and ways you can support someone who is from a different identity than yours.
