Emergency Care

Reasons to consider Emergency Care may include: Contemplating suicide. Strong desire to harm someone else. Not able to guarantee keeping yourself or others safe. Recently sexually or physically assaulted. Recent death of a loved one. Hearing voices or seeing things that are not there.

Urgent Care

Urgent/Crisis Needs are if you are experiencing an urgent need or crisis then please call CAPS at 734-764-8312 at any time 24/7 or come into our office located on the fourth floor of the Michigan Union during our regular office hours. 

The Counselor on Duty is a same-day service and students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. When someone calls or walks in without an appointment, and indicates that they need to be seen today, they will speak to the Counselor on Duty. There is no choice in who you see, the person assigned this role varies by shift. However, we will do our best to align with any preferences. 

  • Examples of reasons to see the "Counselor on Duty" include:
    • If you are not feeling safe
    • If someone close to you has died recently
    • If you have a difficult decision to make in the next 2-3 days
    • If you have been sexually assaulted within the past 72 hours
    • If you have been experiencing a lot of stress for a long time and feel like you really must speak with someone today

 CAPS After Hours Urgent Support:  734-764-8312 (Press 0)  is a hotline outside of business hours,  for any UM student or any person concerned about a UM student, an extension of CAPS and can assist a caller in any mental health crisis situation, and counselors can also assist callers in accessing CAPS or other campus resources

General or Routine Care

Peer Provided Services

Individual Peer Counseling - Trained and supervised by CAPS staff members, Peer Counselors offer support for concerns such as loneliness, adjustment/transition, learning about campus resources, managing stress, making friends, and more.

Wolverine Support Network (WSN) - A student-led peer support program designed to empower students to create a safe community in support of mental well-being and identity development.

Collegiate Recovery Program (CRP) - For students who are recovering from a substance use disorder. Know that you are not alone and contact the U-M CRP to find out about becoming part of the on-campus recovery community.

Caps in Action - is for University of Michigan students who are dedicated to making the U of M community a more holistically healthy environment.

Clinician Provided Services

Individual and Relationship Counseling - Service that most students are talking about when they discuss “CAPS”. Need to schedule an initial consultation.

CAPS Embedded Counselors - To see a CAPS therapist in your School/College, please follow this link to find your embedded therapist. Then, email them directly, and they will send you the online scheduling information.

Group Counseling (Professionally led) - Online and in person group counseling by clinical professionals. These groups are identity & topic based (e.g. COE Women in STEM, ASD students, Eating disorders etc.)

In-Depth Clinical Screenings - Both on and offline screenings for serious mental health concerns (e.g., eating disorders, substance abuse, ADHD, etc.)

Care Management and Referral Services - Students often work with CAPS Care Managers when connecting to a therapist for ongoing counseling, when it's unclear which resource on campus or in Ann Arbor is best, navigating health insurance coverage and/or for help with making counseling affordable. 

Uwill Teletherapy Services - This Partnership provides students with free video, phone, chat and message sessions with licensed mental health professionals free of charge. Students may be referred to this service after a consultation

U-M Specific Technology & App Resources

Togetherall - A safe, virtual space to anonymously interact with and seek mental health and wellbeing support from their peers.

Stressbusters App - A free app tailored to meet the wellness needs of U-M students by providing tools to increase calmness and focus. Tools include, but are not limited to, guided breathing meditations, progressive muscle relaxation, and sleep tips.

MiTalk - Self-help website on a variety of mental health topics affecting U-M students.

Online anonymous screenings - Completely anonymous and confidential, fill out a brief questionnaire on a topic(s) of choice: overall well-being, mood changes, worry, sadness, trauma, drinking habits, gambling behavior, eating habits, and substance use. Upon completion, you will be provided with your results and recommendations.
