CAPS In Action Mental Health Fair

CAPS in Action’s annual Mental Health Fair features inspiring stories from student speakers about their past and ongoing experiences with mental health. The event has been held both virtually and in-person, and our third annual event will take place in Winter 2023. We accept student stories in a variety of formats, including but not limited to verbal presentations, poetry, art, and music. Students are also welcome to submit their stories anonymously, to be read by a CAPS in Action member.

Scope of Services

In support of the educational goals of the University and the Division of Student Life, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a range of clinical, preventative, and training services consistent with the practices and standards of a nationally accredited university counseling center. CAPS is committed to creating a safe and supportive environment based on our multicultural, multi-disciplinary and multi-theoretical values and practices that allow our diverse student body to access care, to receive high quality services, and to take positive pathways to mental health.

Post-Hospitalization Discharge Support

The Clinical Care Management Team, a collaboration between Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and University Health Services (UHS) and in collaboration with Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) at Michigan Medicine, provides mental health support to students who have been hospitalized and/or visited PES at Michigan Medicine or at other hospitals. We offer support in connecting to therapists off campus, individual therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric follow up with a team of clinical social workers within CAPS and UHS. Services are available virtually or in person.

History of CAPS Embedded Model

In August 2014, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) embarked on a new way of effectively and efficiently distributing mental health services for students across the schools and colleges by creating a community-based model - placing CAPS clinicians inside some of the schools and colleges, known as the Embedded Model. The following represents the timeline of how the Embedded Program has grown to currently being in 18 Schools/Colleges across campus.

CAPS Peer Counseling Application 2024-2025

We're taking new applications for students who are interested in becoming Peer Counselors for 2024-2025! As a peer counselor, you would be providing a space for students to be able to express their thoughts and emotions. This can be a comfortable way for those who want to vent to someone who understands what it's like to be a student at UofM. You would be trained on a wide array of topics from members of CAPS Staff and meet for weekly supervision.
