Service Delivery

Clinical Services

First Appointments(FA): A simultaneous process of evaluation and beginning brief work or a referral. Interns provide two FA’s each week; students seen for an FA generally continue as clients with that therapist.

Ongoing Appointments: The philosophy and policy of CAPS is to provide brief therapy, but there is no set number of or limitations to appointments. Interns, with supervisor consultation, learn to manage their client load to keep direct clinical service at approximately 50% of their work time.

Counselor on Duty (COD): Each intern provides three hours weekly of crisis service, which includes walk-in clients and consultations to faculty, staff and concerned others. CAPS does not provide after-hours crisis intervention.

Groups: Interns are paired with a permanent staff member to provide one process group each semester. Opportunities may also be available to provide semi-structured and/or psychoeducational groups, or single-session workshops.

Specialized Assessments: Interns are expected to provide assessments for substance use/abuse, personality, eating and body image concerns, or attentional difficulties screening based on preference and training.

Outreach/ Consultation

Crisis Outreach:All interns may respond as needed to campus crises as part of a CAPS team (on occasion this occurs outside of standard work hours).

Outreach Presentations and Liaisons:The intern will respond to requests from the campus community, and/or develop and market programs to address clinical issues or meet community needs.

Training

Supervision: All interns participate in a supervision seminar (December) and a supervision of supervision seminar (winter term). Since the number of practicum students at CAPS is limited, interns may choose not to supervise.

Consultation:On occasion there may be additional opportunities to participate in system consultations conducted by specific staff members. At times an intern might be asked to help meet outreach workshop requests, but this will be explored on an individual basis within the context of the intern’s overall training.
